But there aren't too many things you can improve on that can have an impact on just about every single part of your game. But if you improve your speed and quickness, your whole game will improve.

You've probably heard the saying: you may only have the basketball in your hands for a couple minutes a game, but you play the entire game with your feet.

It's true. And that's why improving your ability to get up and down the floor quickly, and improving your lateral quickness is so important to your success as a basketball player.

Quickness comes into play on every play:

  • Driving past a defender
  • Cutting towards the basket
  • Playing on-ball defense
  • Sliding into the lane on help-side defense
  • Moving across the lane and leaping for a rebound
  • Jumping out into the passing lane to deflect the ball

It's so obvious that becoming faster and quicker can improve your game, but not everyone works to improve in these areas.

But you can.

Here are some things you can do to improve your speed and quickness:

  • Agility ladder drills
  • Run stadium stairs
  • Do jump rope drills
  • Run sprints
  • Do cone drills

And above all, play lots of hard, competitive basketball. Playing basketball against good competition is one of the best ways to improve as a player, get in great shape, and improve your footspeed/quickness.

Improve your quickness, improve your game. It's that simple.
