3 Secrets to Becoming a Dominant Offensive Player

It's one thing to be an OK or good offensive player. But to really dominate the game takes some special ability.

Being a dominant player takes more than just a good jump shot, or the ability to pass the basketball.

It takes fierce determination and great basketball sense.

Read the article below for 3 secrets to becoming a big-time, dominating offensive player.

3 Secrets to Becoming a Dominant Offensive Player

Being good is easy. Being great takes something special. As a coach, I tell all my players that there are basic things they have to do to play well. But to become a great player takes more. And few players are willing or able to do what it takes to reach that level.

I'm a big believer in specifics. As a coach, I give my clients specific drills, advice, and steps they can take to improve their game.

So here are 3 secrets I tell my clients to help them improve their game. If you're already a good player, these can take your game to another level and help
you dominate the competition.

Secret 1: Develop your court vision and awareness

Good basketball players see the court. They know where other players are (both their teammates and their opponents), they see plays developing, and they know where the ball is at all times. Having good court vision and awareness can help you anticipate the action and help put you in the right place at the right time.

Court vision is especially important for guards. If you handle the ball a lot, you need to know where the other players are on the court.

Secret 2: Play with power and decisiveness

Do you move around the court with speed, power, and purpose? Are your cuts to the basket explosive? Do you set powerful screens? Do you explode past your defender on the dribble-drive?

Basketball isn't a game for someone that is lazy, or slow, or uncertain. When you play ball, you have to move around the court with power and decisiveness.

Pay attention the next time you take the court: are you moving just to move, or are you moving to make things happen?

Secret 3: Play with speed and quickness

Have you ever heard anyone describe a great player as slow and lazy? I doubt it. That's because basketball is a game of action and speed. And anyone that wants to be a good player has to play the game with speed and quickness.

Whether it's a dribble drive, an offensive move and shot, getting into position for a rebound, or playing defense, you've got to be quick.

If you watch some of the best players in the NBA, you'll notice that they play the game with speed and quickness. Whether it's Tim Duncan making a great post move, Kobe Bryant taking a guy off the dribble from the wing, of Steve Nash pushing the ball up the court on a fast break, you'll see the pace at which they play the game.

They take it to their opponent. They push the game. They play with speed and power. To become a great offensive player, you have to play the game at a high rate of speed: fast, but always under control.
